And yet, for those who make the right choices, it is also one of the most rewarding investments — an asset that generates charter income while offering unparalleled freedom of navigation.

This guide is written by International Yachts Charter and Brokerage XXIII — a team that has combined for over 20 years the activities of owner, broker and charter agency in Mediterranean markets. We have managed superyacht purchases and sales on the French Riviera, in Italy, in the Balearics and in the Caribbean. What we share here — is what we tell our own clients before they sign.

Part 1 — The Luxury Yacht Market in 2026

The State of the Market

The global luxury yachting market is going through a consolidation period in 2026 after the years of strong post-pandemic demand. Pre-owned yacht prices have normalized, delivery times for new builds have shortened, and purchasing opportunities are more numerous than they were in 2022-2023.

2026 trends:

Recently refitted yachts (2018-2022 with 2023-2025 refit) represent the best opportunities — they combine modern technology, contemporary interiors and prices lower than equivalent new builds.

Italian builders — Baglietto, Tankoa, Couach — maintain their dominant position in the 30-60 meter segment. Demand for explorer and semi-displacement yachts is increasing significantly.

Market Segments

Category

LOA

Indicative new price

Pre-owned price

Motor Yacht

20–30 m

€3 – 8M

€1 – 5M

Superyacht

30-45 m

€8 – 25M

€4 – 18M

Mega Yacht

45-60 m

€20 – 60M

€12 – 45M

Giga Yacht

60m+

€50M+

€30M+

Part 2 — New or Pre-Owned?

New Yacht — The Advantages

Total customization — you choose every detail, from interior architecture to technical equipment, including hull colors and onboard toys.

Builder warranty — typically 2 to 5 years depending on the shipyard, covering the structure and main equipment.

Cutting-edge technology — hybrid or electric propulsion, latest generation stabilization systems, integrated satellite connectivity.

Major drawback — the timelines. A 40 to 50-meter superyacht ordered today will be delivered in 18 to 36 months depending on the shipyard. And the final price often exceeds the initial quote by 15 to 25%.

Pre-Owned Yacht — The Advantages

Immediate availability — boarding possible within weeks following signature.

Negotiable price — unlike new builds where the builder imposes its pricing, the pre-owned price is always negotiable. Negotiation margins vary from 5 to 20% depending on the yacht’s age and the seller’s motivation.

Known condition — a well-maintained charter yacht has undergone regular inspections, annual certifications and documented maintenance. It is paradoxically a more transparent yacht than a new one in its break-in phase.

Our recommendation for 2026 — yachts built between 2018 and 2022, with a refit completed between 2023 and 2025, represent the best value for money available on the current market. They benefit from recent technology, upgraded interiors and a price 30 to 40% lower than the equivalent new build.

Part 3 — The Step-by-Step Purchasing Process

Step 1 — Define the Project (D-180 to D-90)

Before looking at a single yacht, define your usage project precisely:

Personal use only — what frequency of navigation per year? Which destinations? How many passengers maximum?

Partial charter use — do you wish to generate charter income to offset operating costs? In this case, the choice of yacht, its flag and its management must be considered from the outset to optimize profitability.

Pure investment — some buyers purchase a superyacht with a view to resale in 3-5 years, maximizing charter income to maintain the asset’s value.

These three approaches involve radically different choices of yacht, flag and financial structure.

Step 2 — Yacht Selection (D-90 to D-60)

This is the stage where the broker’s role is most valuable. Based on your usage project and your budget, your broker identifies yachts matching your profile across the entire global market.

Selection criteria:

LOA — length overall determines accessible ports, authorized navigation zones and operating costs. A 50-meter yacht closes access to certain coves in Formentera and imposes significantly higher port fees.

Propulsion — conventional diesel, IPS, hybrid or electric. Each technology has different implications for consumption, maintenance and resale value.

Builder — the shipyard’s reputation directly impacts resale value and spare parts availability. Baglietto, Tankoa, Couach, Numarine, Riva/Ferretti — each has its strengths and particularities.

Maintenance history — a well-documented yacht with regular maintenance at recognized shipyards is worth more and reassures the buyer about the actual technical condition.

Step 3 — The Offer and Negotiation (D-60 to D-45)

Once the yacht is targeted, your broker drafts a purchase offer — a non-binding document that specifies the proposed price, contingencies and envisaged timeline.

Negotiation covers the price, but also the purchase conditions — the included inventory, responsibility for any work identified during inspection, delivery timeline.

An experienced broker knows the seller’s real motivation — is he in a hurry to sell? Has he received other offers? Has the yacht been on the market for a long time? This information, rarely public, guides the negotiation strategy.

Step 4 — The Survey (D-45 to D-30)

The survey is the technical inspection of the yacht by a certified independent expert. It is the most critical stage of the purchasing process — and the one that inexperienced buyers most tend to neglect.

What the survey covers:

Hull structure — material integrity, osmosis detection on fiberglass hulls, corrosion points on aluminum or steel hulls.

Propulsion systems — condition of engines, transmissions, propellers. A surveyor’s report identifies upcoming overhauls and their estimated cost.

Electrical and electronic systems — age and condition of panels, compliance with current standards, condition of batteries and navigation systems.

Safety equipment — life rafts, EPIRB beacons, fire equipment — must be current according to the flag country’s certifications.

Survey cost — between €3,000 and €15,000 depending on the yacht’s size. It is the best possible insurance against an unpleasant surprise after signature.

Step 5 — Flag Selection (D-30 to D-15)

The yacht’s flag determines the applicable regulations, certification obligations, commercial charter possibilities and associated taxation. This is a complex subject requiring specialized legal and tax advice.

The most commonly used flags in the Mediterranean:

French flag — suitable for navigation primarily in French waters. French VAT applies except for specific exemption structures.

Maltese flag — widely used for commercial charter in the Mediterranean. Advantageous tax regime, internationally recognized MCA certifications.

Cayman Islands flag — standard for mega yachts. Neutral tax regime, high international recognition.

Andorran flag — emerging, specific to certain asset structures.

Step 6 — Signature and Transfer (D-15 to D)

The signature of the final contract, transfer of the security deposit to an escrow account, verification of documentation (title of ownership, registration certificate, safety certificates) and payment of the balance — all these steps are managed by your broker in coordination with the legal teams of both parties.

Part 4 — The Hidden Costs of Ownership

What No One Tells You Before Purchase

The purchase price of a superyacht is only the beginning. Annual operating costs typically represent 10 to 15% of the yacht’s value per year.

Breakdown of annual costs for a 40-meter superyacht:

Item

Estimated annual cost

Crew (captain + 4-5 members)

€300,000 – €500,000

Fuel (200h navigation/year)

€80,000 – €150,000

Insurance

€50,000 – €120,000

Port fees and winter storage

€80,000 – €200,000

Preventive maintenance

€150,000 – €300,000

Refit (amortized over 5 years)

€100,000 – €300,000

Estimated annual total

€760,000 – €1,570,000

How Charter Offsets Costs

A 40-meter superyacht chartered 16 weeks per year at €120,000/week in low season generates approximately €1,920,000 in annual gross revenue. After broker commission, APA and management fees, net income is around €1,200,000 to €1,400,000 — sufficient to cover virtually all operating costs.

This is precisely why many superyacht owners opt for a mixed strategy — personal navigation in July-August and charter placement the rest of the year.

Part 5 — Yachts Available for Sale at International Yachts Charter and Brokerage XXIII

International Yachts Charter and Brokerage XXIII accompanies its clients in both markets — charter and sales.
